UKUSA Performing Arts Programme (UKUSA) is a registered non-profit, community arts project that has been operating in KwaZulu-Natal for over twenty years. UKUSA has, and will continue, to contribute to arts education, advocacy and community development by providing accessible music, dance and drama classes, workshops, public concerts and accredited graded Music Theory examinations in the greater Durban area.
The vision of UKUSA has remained focused on providing equal opportunities to economically disadvantaged participants who show a willingness to learn, ability in the performing arts and a desire to share with others what they have learned from UKUSA. More than 8000 students have attended UKUSA since its inception in 1987 when the first classes were held in a room at the old Durban Station. A few years later UKUSA relocated to the then Department of Music at the former University of Natal where the programme was housed till 2014. UKUSA has a mutually beneficial linkage with the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Music and Drama students in the School of Arts have been teaching in the UKUSA Performing Arts Programme since 1990.

Current funding from the National Lotteries Commission and the Kalipa Foundation enables UKUSA to operate within the communities we serve and there are a number of active programmes currently running throughout the greater Durban area including central Durban (city centre), Point and Inner City area, Overport, Umlazi, Umbilo and KwaXimba in Botha’s Hill.

UKUSA currently offers classes in Singing, Guitar, Piano, Drums, Recorder, Music Theory, Drama and Dance. Our beneficiaries are diverse and include participants in an age range of 10 – 65! Our programmes take place in schools, community centres, Child & Youth Care Centre and churches.

The UKUSA Performing Arts programme is as much about developing life-skills as it is about arts education. The important work that UKUSA is doing highlights our values which are explicit in everything we do: Creativity. Empowerment. Inclusivity. Integrity. Participation. Leadership. Sharing. Community.
