US Consulate invites KUMISA to present a workshop on SA music intellectual property rights


On the 25th of May 2022, the U.S Consulate invited various organisations and institutions across varying sectors to lead a discussion about the role and importance of intellectual property rights.


Amongst the invited organisations was the CIPC, Trade & Investment KZN, Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), U.S Commercial Service, Invotech, Innovate Durban, eThekwini Municipality (International Relations), United States Patent & Trademark Office, Adams & Adams, and KUMISA, while the program also featured Makhubalo Ikaneng (Filmmaker & Storyteller) and Lalela Mswane (current Miss South Africa).


In the program, KUMISA's MD, Thando Nyameni, focused on intellectual property rights' importance in the music industry, emphasizing that intellectual property is the primary unit of trade in the industry.

Additionally, he discussed the difference between the master recording rights and the music publishing rights, as well as the relevant music collective management organizations that assist with the collection and distribution of music royalties.
